Formula of Distinction (Basic)
Distinction is a discrete, high-cost act of extracting structure from an undifferentiated field. It does not scale linearly and requires resources to be restored between iterations.
Formula of Distinction (Expanded)
Distinction is an act through which consciousness identifies a structurally significant difference in a field where the elements were previously perceived as equivalent or merged.
In doing so:
-
Distinction is not a continuous process. It takes place in discrete impulses.
-
Each act of distinction:
- requires concentration of attention;
- is accompanied by a restructuring of the map of meaning;
-
affects not only a local element but also neighboring structures.
-
The cost of distinction is nonlinear:
- one substantial act can cost more than numerous superficial operations;
-
additional time does not produce a proportionate increase in the number of distinctions.
-
After an act of distinction, local depletion of resources occurs. As a consequence:
- subsequent operations lose depth;
-
the risk of shifting to mechanical changes without an increase in meaning grows.
-
Restoring the capacity for distinction requires:
- stepping outside the current structure (defocusing);
- temporarily breaking contact with the object;
- returning with an altered state of attention.
Operational Consequence
Progress in working with a complex structure is measured not by the number of changes, but by the number of substantial distinctions discovered and integrated.
It follows that:
- one discovered node > dozens of cosmetic edits;
- trying to “squeeze out one more distinction” when resources are exhausted reduces precision;
- stopping after discovering a node is part of the process, not an interruption.
Boundary Between Cheap and Expensive Operations
Cheap operations:
- rearranging formulations;
- local stylistic editing;
- linear clarification without changing the structure.
Expensive operations (distinction):
- identifying a hidden contradiction;
- discovering a missing link;
- changing the logic of block arrangement;
- redefining a qualification (for example, a change of legal regime);
- exposing a substitution of grounds.
Meta-Formula
Distinction does not process an already given structure; it creates access to a new structure.
Short Version for Insertion
Distinction is a discrete, high-cost act of extracting structure that occurs in impulses, does not scale linearly, and requires resources to be restored between iterations. Progress is determined by the number of substantial distinctions, not by the volume of edits.
