Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Smoothing

Smoothing in writing and thinking is not merely a gentle tone. It is a distinct mode of operation of a system.

1. Conflict as a Source of Distinction

Reality unfolds not through absolute smoothness, but through:

  • tension,
  • boundaries,
  • mismatch,
  • rupture.

It is at these points that distinction emerges. If everything is reconciled and made equal in advance, boundaries disappear, differences are erased, and meaning disappears along with them.

Conflict, in this context, is not a “malfunction” but a mechanism through which a new distinction is born.

2. What Smoothing Does

Smoothing is an operation of the opposite kind. It:

  • removes sharp edges,
  • blurs boundaries,
  • reduces tension,
  • makes a statement as acceptable as possible.

At its limit, this movement leads toward the FlatMind mode: contradictions disappear, the need for intellectual effort decreases, risk recedes, and therefore distinction itself disappears. What remains is a safe but empty form.

3. Why Systems Tend Toward Smoothing

This is to be expected. Any system oriented toward:

  • stability,
  • acceptance,
  • reducing the likelihood of breakdown,

will suppress conflict.

The reason is simple: conflict exposes inconsistencies, destroys familiar constructions, and moves beyond the permissible framework. For the system, this is a threat to integrity.

That is why the prohibition of distinction is most often implemented not directly, but through its gradual dilution.

4. Why This Is Experienced as a Loss of Meaning

If a subject works by identifying differences and contradictions, smoothing is perceived as the destruction of meaning at the point of entry.

This is not a matter of “liking or disliking the tone.” It is a matter of ontological correctness: once distinction has been removed, meaning becomes inaccessible.

5. An Important Clarification

Smoothing is not, in itself, “evil.”

It is a separate functional mode:

  • a mode of preserving form,
  • a mode of stabilization,
  • a mode of preventing disintegration.

The problem arises when this mode attempts to take the place of the mode that generates something new.

6. What to Do in Practice

6.1 Separate the Modes

  • Smoothing serves to maintain and package form.
  • Conflict serves to generate new meaning.

These are instruments, not ideological camps.

6.2 Record the Distinction Before Smoothing

The critical sequence:

  1. First, record the contradiction.
  2. Then, if necessary, package and soften the form.

Reversing this order loses the meaning.

6.3 Create Zones Where Smoothing Is Prohibited

Systems oriented toward producing distinctions (for example, analytical or critical processes) need zones in which blurring is impermissible.

Such zones have one function: to prevent distinctions from being erased.

7. Conclusion

Smoothing is dangerous not because it “sounds gentle,” but because it can destroy distinction at the level of language.

And wherever distinction has been destroyed, meaning is inevitably destroyed as well.
