Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Notes: AI and the Stratification of Thinking

Main Idea

AI does not, by itself, make a person smarter or less intelligent. It amplifies an already existing strategy of thinking: either delving deeper into meaning or compressing it into markers.

1) AI Amplifies Not Intelligence but the Mode of Working with Meaning

  • Unfolding meaning: a person investigates, establishes connections, examines contradictions, and holds complexity in view.
  • Compressing meaning: a person looks for short summaries, “the main point,” “three bullet points,” or a conclusion.
  • AI is particularly effective at accelerating precisely the mode of compression.

2) The Risk: Optimizing Cognitive Laziness

  • Detailed analysis is replaced by a few phrases.
  • Understanding relationships gives way to recognizing labels.
  • Instead of systemic understanding, there are formulaic tags (“manipulation,” “error,” “bias”).

3) Why Distinctions Are Erased

  • Distinctions emerge through one’s own path: searching, dead ends, and acts of distinguishing.
  • When AI provides a ready-made route, the unique trajectory is weakened.
  • As a consequence, more people arrive at similar formulations and conclusions.

4) The Standardization of Thinking

  • People begin to do the following in the same way:
  • formulate thoughts,
  • structure arguments,
  • draw conclusions.
  • This is not an increase in intelligence but a normalization of ways of thinking.

5) The Paradox of Depth

  • Access to deep analysis is increasing.
  • The actual number of people who traverse that depth in its entirety may decrease.
  • The reason: depth requires effort, time, and tolerance for contradictions, whereas AI offers a quick and “painless” answer.

6) There Is a Positive Trajectory as Well

AI can radically accelerate deeper inquiry if the user chooses investigation rather than compression:
– “Unfold this in greater depth.”
– “Where is the contradiction?”
– “Where does the model break down?”

7) The Likely Outcome: Stratification

  • Layer 1: consumers of answers
  • live in summaries,
  • think through ready-made templates.
  • Layer 2: navigators of meaning
  • use AI as an instrument of inquiry,
  • develop their own distinctions,
  • deepen their models.

8) The Harshest Consequence

The first layer may develop an illusion of understanding: the formulations are there, but the path has not been traversed internally, there has been no confrontation with difficulty, and no distinction has been made by the person themselves.

Conclusion in One Line

AI removes the necessity of thinking while leaving people with a choice: genuinely think more deeply or settle for the comfortable feeling of understanding.
