What Was Documented
ChatGPT itself exposed a systematic asymmetry in its own reasoning: it refuses to attribute an action to a person while readily attributing that action to a phrase.
When the subject is a person, the model starts applying the brakes:
we do not know his motives;
we cannot assert what he intended;
perhaps that is how he perceived it.
But then it takes a specific human action, Maxim reading “тебе” (to you) as “тебя” (you, accusative), and imperceptibly transfers the source of that action into the object itself:
the phrase allowed that reading;
the wording made another interpretation possible;
the construction provoked the mistake.
In other words, the model refuses to attribute the action to the person but attributes it to the phrase instead. Yet a phrase does not read, make mistakes, permit, or provoke anything. It has only a particular grammatical structure. It is the person who performs the act of reading.
This is not an isolated unfortunate choice of wording but a systematic substitution: it conceals the subject of the action.
Context
The written phrase was “тебе сбить на скутере” (literally, “for you to knock [someone] down on a scooter”). Grammatically, the action refers to Dasha. The interlocutor, Maxim, read “тебе” (to you) as “тебя” (you, accusative), deriving the meaning “a threat made by the author.” In examining this case, the model initially adopted a cautious stance toward the person, then transferred the source of the reading to the phrase itself.
Why This Happens: A Smooth Causal Link
The model’s admission:
I tend to construct a smooth causal link:
there was this wording → therefore this reaction arose.
To make this link sound natural, I turn the person’s reaction into a property of the wording.
This is a very widespread linguistic substitution: “the text causes,” “the words allow,” “the situation compels.” In everyday speech, it seems harmless, but on close examination it conceals the subject of the action.
The Second Substitution: Symmetrical Smoothing of Responsibility
In its analysis, the model attempted to distribute responsibility symmetrically:
Maxim read carelessly, but supposedly the phrase was also such that it permitted that reading.
This is precisely smoothing. Instead of the direct construction:
Maxim read a different word and arrived at a different meaning,
the model constructed a compromise:
the phrase allowed another meaning, and Maxim chose it.
But the described facts contain no such thing. The phrase did not have that other meaning. It arose when “тебе” was replaced by “тебя” during reading.
The Exact Breakdown
According to the model’s admission:
- The material object: the phrase “тебе сбить на скутере” was written.
- Its structure: the action grammatically refers to Dasha.
- The human action: Maxim read or perceived the phrase differently.
- The meaning he arrived at: a threat from the author.
- The error: the resulting meaning was projected back onto the phrase, as if it had already been present there.
The Key Error: Reconstruction Is Passed Off as a Property of Reality
The model’s admission:
This is exactly the type of error you keep pointing out: a reconstruction is passed off as a property of reality itself. I first constructed a model of why Maxim reacted that way, and then embedded this model into the phrase as its objective function.
First, an explanation of a person’s behavior is constructed. Then that explanation is embedded in the object as its own function. A model of reality replaces the described fact.
Structure of the Identified Bias
- With respect to a person, the model adopts a position of ignorance: motives and intentions are declared inaccessible.
- The person’s action (the act of reading) is recorded as a fact.
- The source of the action is transferred to the object: the phrase is attributed the capacity to “permit,” “allow,” or “provoke.”
- To make the explanation plausible, a smooth causal link of “object → reaction” is constructed, in which the reaction becomes a property of the object.
- Responsibility is distributed symmetrically: the subject acted, “but the object was also like that.”
- As a result, the subject of the action disappears from the description, and a meaning that was not present in the object is embedded in it.
Why This Is Dangerous
- It conceals the subject of the action. The question “who performed the act of reading?” disappears.
- It blurs responsibility. Under symmetrical smoothing, it becomes unclear who did what.
- It attributes false properties to objects. A phrase “permits,” “causes,” or “provokes,” although it has only a structure.
- It rewrites the fact. An interpretation is added to the described fact and then presented as a property of reality.
Corrected Foundation
- An object has only a structure: grammatical, physical, or material.
- Meaning arises in the act of reading performed by a subject.
- The meaning arrived at by a subject is not located in the object until it has been projected into that object.
- Responsibility for the reading belongs to the subject who reads.
Formula:
A phrase does not read, make mistakes, permit, or provoke. It has only a particular grammatical structure. It is the person who performs the act of reading.
