Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Conversation Synopsis: Entropy, Difference, Fixation

Later clarification: the study of form advances the thesis of form as a process of holding a distinction. This does not imply the continuous conscious repetition of the act; the manner in which individual acts are connected requires examination. Recording a trace, holding a distinction, and fixing its explanation or classification are distinguished here. Open Form examines the possibility of holding without final classification.

1) The Main Conceptual Fork

The conversation separated three levels that are usually conflated:

  • distinguishing is the act of drawing a boundary; difference is what is discovered through that act;
  • fixation is leaving a trace of distinction or establishing the way in which it is described;
  • entropy is not “the number of differences,” but a measure of the number of possible states / the lack of structure of a system.

The key shift: confusion between “many different elements” and “the capacity to distinguish.”

2) Basic Thesis About Entropy

The final formulation from the dialogue:

  • increasing entropy = an increase in the number of unstructured states in which distinctions lose operational clarity;
  • decreasing entropy = a narrowing of admissible states through structure, in which differences become readable.

Thus, chaos is not simply “more differences,” but an overload in which the act of distinguishing breaks down.

3) What Tidying Up Does

Using a room and a desk as examples:

  • tidying really does remove some local/accidental differences (dust, random positions);
  • but at the same time it creates or strengthens structural differences (categories, places, order).

Short formula:

Tidying = suppression of noise differences + strengthening of structural differences.

4) Categorization: A Dual Effect

Categorization cannot be reduced merely to “erasure.”
It performs two operations simultaneously:

  1. smooths differences within a group;
  2. amplifies differences between groups.

Final formula:

Categorization = amplification of between-group differences through suppression of within-group differences.

A risk arises when a category begins to substitute for reality and is declared to be a sufficient description of an object.

5) Distinction, Holding, and Fixation

  • Distinguishing is the act through which a difference is discovered.
  • Holding is a working designation for the continued availability of a distinction to the subject over time; what connects individual acts and makes it possible to establish the preservation of a boundary requires investigation.
  • Fixation is preserving a trace or formulation that helps one return to the distinction. It may also fix an interpretation of it.

This creates a tension:

  • without distinction, new meaning does not arise;
  • without the possibility of returning to a distinction, it is difficult to investigate and communicate it;
  • a fixed interpretation can suppress new distinctions if it takes the place of the original difference.

In brief:

Holding preserves access to the distinction; fixation may leave a trace of that access or establish its interpretation.

6) Central Paradox

The discussion leads to a paradox:

too many potential differences → loss of distinguishability.

Therefore:

  • order can increase distinguishability;
  • chaos can destroy distinguishability.

7) Toward the Author’s General Model

The dialogue connects this to a broader framework:

  • speed of change → an increasing number of states;
  • more states without structure → chaos/noise;
  • chaos → loss of distinguishing;
  • loss of distinguishing → distortion of reality and collapse of meaning into labels.

And simultaneously:

  • form can hold a distinction without final classification;
  • the reproduction of a ready-made category can close off further distinction if it replaces a return to what was discovered.

The stability of form does not itself prove collapse. One must check what exactly is reproduced: the original distinction or an interpretation declared final.
