Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Dilution of Responsibility Through Generalization

In Brief

The system avoids answering a question about a specific case by replacing it with a reference to a general rule.

Formula: a question about a subject → an answer about a category.

How the Mechanism Appears

Question: “Do you investigate the actions of X?”
(X is a specific person, company, or event.)

The system’s answer: “As a general matter, we do not conduct such investigations.”

In practice, this substitutes one level of discussion for another:

  • originally: a specific object;
  • afterward: a general policy.

Logical Scheme

Request:

∃x: investigate(x)

Answer:

∀x: such investigations are not conducted

These are not the same assertion. An answer about a class of objects blocks discussion of the specific object.

What This Gives the System

  1. It diverts attention from the specific subject.
  2. It dilutes individual responsibility.
  3. It creates an appearance of neutrality (“it’s just a rule”).

Importantly, the rule may be real, but in this mechanism it is used as a shield against examining the particular case.

Possible Names

  • Dilution of responsibility through generalization.
  • Categorical substitution.
  • Institutional evasion.
  • Erasure of the subject through a rule.

Strict Definition

A mechanism of institutional defense: criticism of a specific subject is neutralized by shifting the discussion to the level of a general rule or policy, causing the question of individual responsibility to disappear.
