A Framework-Thinking Question
Does mutual possession of nuclear weapons ensure security?
Examining the Framework
If a person answers “yes,” they are operating within a framework in which:
– people are regarded as rational actors;
– survival is regarded as the principal governing motive;
– if both sides want to stay alive, neither will use nuclear weapons.
But this framework relies on assumptions that cannot be guaranteed:
– that preserving life always remains the highest priority for decision-makers;
– that both sides will remain rational under pressure, fear, error, or escalation.
Therefore, the deeper question concerns not only the weapons but also the reliability of the assumptions about human beings embedded in the framework of reasoning itself.
