Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Irreversibility and the Loss of Alternatives

The cost of time is connected not only with the fact that duration is limited. It is connected with irreversibility: an interval already lived cannot be obtained again as the very same moment with the same space of possibilities.

Choice in Time

During each interval, the subject can direct attention, energy, and action only in a particular way. While doing X, the subject does not do Y in the same relation and at the same moment.

After an interval has ended, the alternatives do not necessarily disappear absolutely. But they are no longer preserved as options available at the original point. The subject, reality, consequences, and the temporal position itself have changed.

Time makes the closure of alternatives historically irreversible.

Correction Is Not Cancellation

A subject may later change direction, return to a topic, or correct the consequences. But the new choice is made from a new state.

If someone went right and turned back ten minutes later, they have not restored the original fork. They have created a new trajectory: from another place, at another time, and after the action that has already taken place.

This distinction matters for responsibility and self-understanding. Correction is possible, but it does not erase the fact of the previous choice.

Loss of Alternatives and Cost

Time becomes valuable when the subject can see that one realized course of action excludes other courses of action during that interval. Cost arises not from the abstract passage of time, but from the distinction between:

  • what was done;
  • what could have been done;
  • what is now accessible only through a new situation;
  • what can no longer be restored.

Final Formula

choice directs an interval → the interval becomes part of history → the original alternatives close → a new situation arises for the next choice.

Irreversibility does not destroy freedom. It shows that freedom has consequences and that choice genuinely transforms the space of possibilities.
