Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Retrospectivization

Related materials: teleologization, the result erases its own origin, irreversibility and loss of alternatives, reification, goal.

Introduction

Once a result has occurred, the past becomes accessible from a position that did not previously exist. The subject already knows which possibility was realized, which forms persisted, and how the sequence under consideration ended. This knowledge makes it possible to see real connections that were previously unknown, but it also creates the risk of restructuring the past according to the form of its result.

Retrospectivization concerns this backward ordering. Its subject is not every return to the past, but the transformation of a known result into the principle for selecting, connecting, and evaluating preceding events.

Definition

Retrospectivization is the reconstruction of the past through a known result, whereby preceding events are selected and connected as if the realized outcome had been their natural, regular, or principal direction.

Its basic structure:

a multitude of events and possible continuations existed
→ result X occurred
→ the past is viewed from the position of X
→ events connected with X form a coherent trajectory
→ alternatives and discontinuities lose significance or disappear

Here, the result does not necessarily become a goal. It becomes the form of the narrative about its own origin.

The Result as a Principle for Selecting the Past

The past does not return to the subject in its entirety. From the endpoint, the subject distinguishes some connections and does not retain others. What persisted in the result is easier to recognize as significant; what ended, remained unformed, or led toward other possibilities is more readily regarded as chance or a dead end.

result X exists now
→ traces of events compatible with X remain
→ these events are selected as a causal line
→ the line is accepted as the essential content of the past

The realized possibility thus receives an advantage not because it was already principal in the past, but because it alone is accessible in the form of the present result.

Retrospectivization does not necessarily invent individual events. Every link in a reconstruction may be factually correct. The substitution takes place at the level of their organization: a selected sequence is passed off as the past itself, although it was constructed from a later position.

Example of Bankruptcy

A company makes many decisions under conditions of incomplete information. Some increase expenses, others change the product, and still others affect sales. Eventually, the company goes bankrupt.

Afterward, a coherent narrative appears:

an unsuccessful hire weakened the team, the product launch increased expenses, and the change of market deprived the company of customers; everything led step by step toward bankruptcy.

The causal connections in this narrative may be real. But knowing the ending changes their status. Decisions that previously belonged to an open space of possibilities become stages of a single trajectory. Successful moves, unrealized alternatives, external contingencies, and moments when bankruptcy could still have been prevented fade into the background.

No goal is attributed to anyone here. The participants may have done everything in their power to avoid bankruptcy. Thus, this is retrospectivization but not yet teleologization.

Example of a Career Trajectory

A person worked as a developer, then became a team lead, a manager, and, years later, a CEO.

After the appointment, earlier positions are easily connected into a career ladder:

working as a developer provided a technical foundation, the leadership role taught team management, and the managerial position prepared the person to run the company.

This narrative may accurately name experience gained. But it does not establish that the final position determined the person’s choices at every stage. There may have been no overarching goal; decisions may have been made for different reasons; some events may have happened by chance.

The result turned a sequence of heterogeneous states into a single trajectory.

The Emergence of Humans as the Center of an Evolutionary Narrative

After the emergence of modern humans, preceding changes can be selected according to their relationship to humanity:

early forms of life
→ increasing complexity of organisms
→ vertebrates
→ mammals
→ primates
→ humans

Each link may designate an actual line of descent. But the selected line constitutes a negligible part of all the changes that occurred and all the forms that existed. Side branches, extinct species, and continuations that did not lead to humans become background.

An impression arises that the history of life was a gradual movement from the simple toward the human. This does not require claiming that evolution wanted to create humans. It is enough to make the human being the principle for selecting and organizing the past.

An anthropocentric retrospective can therefore exist without explicit teleology.

A Trajectory Appears from Its Endpoint

Before a result occurs, events need not form the trajectory that the subject later discovers. Every moment may have had different possible continuations, and the event’s significance for the result had not yet been established.

at time t1, event A permits continuations B, C, D
→ B was realized
→ from position B, event A is called the first step toward B

But A was a first step toward B only within a reconstruction that connects realized states. At the moment of A, it might not have had such significance for the acting subjects, nor occupied such a place among the causes.

Retrospectivization transfers the structure of a completed sequence into the unfinished past:

“B happened after A”
→ “A led toward B”
→ “A was a stage on the path toward B”

Each transition adds an increasingly strong form of directedness to the fact.

Loss of Alternatives

A realized result is material and stable. Unrealized possibilities leave no comparable result. Thus, after a choice, the past looks poorer than it was at the moment of choosing.

If the subject sees only the realized line, an illusion of inevitability arises:

X occurred
→ the sequence of conditions of X is known
→ other possibilities are invisible
→ it seems that the conditions could only have led to X

Yet knowledge of one actual continuation does not establish the absence of other possible continuations. The irreversibility of a result destroys some alternatives in practice, while retrospectivization can also destroy them in the description.

What happened then becomes not one realized possibility, but the sole content of what preceded it.

Regularity and Inevitability

A retrospective narrative is often strengthened by the words “ закономерно” (“as a natural consequence”), “inevitably,” and “everything was leading to this.”

But we must distinguish:

after the result, the causes participating in it can be established;

under the given conditions, the result had a high probability;

the result was the only possible one;

everything preceding it was a movement toward the result.

These assertions are not equivalent. The fact that an event can be causally explained after it occurs does not mean that it was predetermined or occupied a privileged position before it happened.

A result may be regular in the sense of corresponding to operative causes without being inevitable: other causes, actions, and contingent events might have changed the continuation.

Retrospectivization and Teleologization

The distinction between the concepts concerns exactly what is added to what happened.

Retrospectivization adds the trajectory of the narrative:

result X emerged
→ the past is organized as a sequence leading to X

Teleologization adds a goal:

result X emerged or is anticipated
→ the process occurred for the sake of X

The sentence

the company’s earlier decisions led step by step toward bankruptcy

may be retrospective without positing a goal.

The sentence

the decisions were made in order to bring the company to bankruptcy

adds a goal and requires a subject who retained that goal.

The operations often follow one another:

a result occurred
→ the past is described through the result
→ the past is declared a movement toward the result
→ the result is declared the goal of what happened

But the final step is not contained in the preceding ones. A narrative about moving toward X is not yet a claim that what happened existed for the sake of X.

Retrospectivization as Erasure of Origin

A result emerges from a space of conditions broader than the result itself. When the past is restructured solely according to the line that survived, that space disappears.

a multitude of questions, attempts, and distinctions
→ one form acquired continuation
→ the past was selected through that form
→ the original space became preparation for the form

In this way, modern science can turn earlier philosophical inquiry into an immature stage of its own development. A completed disciplinary boundary is transferred into conditions in which it did not yet exist, and everything incompatible with the later result is declared extraneous.

Actual genesis, with its many branch points, is replaced by a trajectory built backward from the endpoint. In this sense, retrospectivization is one of the mechanisms through which the result erases its own origin.

Retrospectivization and Reification

Retrospectivization creates a trajectory as a form connecting events. Reification begins if that constructed form is accepted as an independent structure of the past itself.

a subject connected events from the position of the result
→ a narrative of a path emerged
→ the path was declared an objectively existing direction of history

The retrospective selection becomes invisible, and the “historical trajectory” begins to function as a real bearer of necessity.

However, these operations are not identical. A subject may realize that they are constructing one of several possible retrospectives and not grant it independent existence. Conversely, one can reify a category without reconstructing the past.

Retrospection Is Not an Error in Itself

From the present, one can indeed establish connections that were inaccessible to participants in the process. Later data help identify causes of illness, consequences of a decision, the origin of a form, or the significance of an event that previously went unnoticed.

The problem arises not from knowing the result but from erasing the position from which the reconstruction is built.

A sound retrospective retains:

  • that the observer already knows the result;
  • that participants in the past may not have known or anticipated it;
  • that events are selected relative to the question being asked;
  • that the realized line does not exhaust the earlier space of possibilities;
  • that causality is not equivalent to inevitability;
  • that an event’s significance then may have differed from its significance now.

Retrospective knowledge becomes substitution when the observer’s own endpoint is passed off as the structure of the past as such.

How to Recognize Retrospectivization

Useful questions include:

  1. What result is already known to the author of the narrative?
  2. According to what principle were preceding events selected?
  3. Which events and lines disappeared because they did not continue into the result?
  4. What alternatives existed at each moment considered?
  5. Was the result known or accessible to the acting subjects?
  6. Did the sequence have the same significance before the result arose?
  7. Has “X emerged after this” been replaced by “everything was leading to X”?
  8. Has causal explicability been turned into inevitability?
  9. Have the criteria of the completed result been applied to the conditions of its emergence?

A powerful test is to change the endpoint. Choosing another actual or unrealized result may yield a different trajectory constructed from the same events. This demonstrates the observer’s participation in organizing the narrative.

How to Restore Genesis

Restoring an origin requires more than drawing a line backward from the result. Each moment must be returned to its own space of possibilities.

Instead of:

his entire career led toward becoming CEO,

one can write:

experience gained in earlier positions later proved applicable to the role of CEO; an overarching goal throughout every stage has not been established.

Instead of:

the company’s decisions were a path toward bankruptcy,

we can distinguish:

these decisions participated in producing bankruptcy under the given conditions; other possible continuations existed when those decisions were made.

Instead of:

the history of life moved toward humans,

one can write:

humanity emerged within one of many lines of change among living forms; the selected line describes its origin, not the entire history of life.

Thus, the result remains an object of explanation but ceases to be the sole organizing principle of the past.

Brief Formula

Retrospectivization occurs when a known result becomes the principle for selecting and organizing the past, and a trajectory constructed from the endpoint is accepted as the original structure of what occurred.

Its scheme:

open space of events and possibilities
→ one realized result
→ selection of the past relative to the result
→ construction of a trajectory leading toward it
→ disappearance of alternatives and the observer's position

Retrospectivization answers the question of how a result organizes a narrative about the past. Teleologization makes an additional transition and claims that the past occurred for the sake of that result.
