Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

Summary: Filter Bubble and Echo Chamber

In Brief

  • A filter bubble is an externally constructed, filtered environment: algorithms, recommendations, and behavioral metrics restrict the range of information.
  • An echo chamber is an internally or collectively maintained feedback loop: a person and a community actively exclude dissenting sources.

Bubble: you are imperceptibly placed in a filtered environment.

Echo chamber: you construct an environment in which your own voice is reflected back to you.

1) Filter Bubble: The External Architecture of Filtering

The key actor is the content delivery system, not the user.

Algorithms take into account:
– clicks;
– viewing time;
– completed views;
– interactions;
– emotional engagement;
– attention retention.

The result: the user sees not “the entire internet,” but a personalized showcase of reality.

2) Echo Chamber: Defending a Worldview

The key actor is the person themselves and their group.

Characteristic signs:
– refusing to read or listen to those considered “outsiders”;
– labeling alternatives as “propaganda,” “nonsense,” or “enemy material”;
– excluding other frameworks from the legitimate field of discussion.

Not only filtering but also the defense of identity operates here: disagreement is experienced as a threat.

3) The Main Distinction

  • Passive filtering (bubble): you are fed similar content.
  • Active rejection (echo chamber): you reject what is dissimilar.

In practice, these mechanisms are often interlocked:
1. the algorithm narrows the results it presents;
2. the user accepts the narrowed picture as the norm;
3. constructs a model of the world on this basis;
4. begins defending that model;
5. rejects information that would expand it as a threat.

4) Connection to Absolutization

  • A bubble may be a technical or accidental effect.
  • An echo chamber more often leads to the absolutization of one’s own framework:
  • “my framework = reality”;
  • “everything outside the framework = error/enemy/stupidity.”

The critical substitution:
– “this contradicts my model”
becomes
– “this contradicts reality.”

The echo chamber formula: a mismatch with the map is declared a mismatch with the territory.
