Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

The Single Correct Answer

Brief Formula

For every significant situation, there is one correct option that can be determined in advance and must be discovered before acting.

Type: epistemic and normative frame.

Typical Manifestations

  • “What would be the right thing to do?”
  • “Which option is best?”
  • “First we need to figure out how we are supposed to act.”
  • “If the decision did not lead to success, it must have been wrong.”

Implicit Assumptions

  • only one correct answer is permissible;
  • correctness can be established in advance;
  • uncertainty is a deficiency of knowledge rather than a property of the situation;
  • a mistake devalues the decision or the subject themselves;
  • an external authority or evaluation system can know the correct answer.

Rule of Transition

If a situation requires a choice, one must first find the single correct option. Everything that fails to satisfy the chosen criterion of correctness is excluded even before testing through action.

What Becomes Invisible

  • several equally valid solutions;
  • the answer’s dependence on the subject’s goals and values;
  • experimentation and acquiring knowledge through action;
  • an option suitable locally but not universally;
  • the possibility of revising a decision when conditions change.

Scope of Reasonable Application

The frame is useful for tasks with predetermined rules and verifiable answers, such as an arithmetic exercise or a formal procedure.

It becomes absolute when the organization of a closed task is extended to open-ended life situations, in which the answer depends on context, values, and actions not yet performed.

Fear of making a mistake may sustain this frame, but is not identical to it. Fear is a state of the subject, while the frame is a way of organizing the space of decisions.

Questions for a Metaposition

  • Who determines correctness, and on what grounds?
  • Is there really only one acceptable answer here?
  • Can missing information be obtained through a reversible action?
  • What would I choose if making a mistake did not mean that I myself was wrong?
  • Am I looking for an appropriate solution or for validation by an external evaluator?
