Lex Humanitas reveals where form hides power and replaces meaning.

What Is Genesis?

Genesis is the process through which a form, structure, or meaning arises and comes into being out of preceding conditions. Genesis describes not only what arose, but also the transition that made its emergence possible.

Genesis and Beginning

A beginning fixes the point after which something exists. Genesis reconstructs the path leading to that point: which conditions were already given, which distinctions arose, which connections formed among them, and how a relatively unstable configuration became a stable form.

Genesis is therefore not necessarily absolute creation from nothing. More often, it is a reorganization of already existing material through which a new organization of possibilities emerges.

Minimal Structure of Genesis

In general, genesis can be described as the sequence:

conditions → distinction → connection → stabilization → form

This sequence need not be linear. An emerging form may change the initial conditions, generate new distinctions, and initiate another cycle of becoming.

Genesis and Cause

A cause answers the question of why an event occurred or a property arose. Genesis answers a broader question: how did this form arise out of a particular state, and what transitions made it recognizable and stable?

One cause may suffice to explain an event, but not to describe the genesis of a system. A system arises not only through an influence, but also through the way it organizes distinctions, connections, and its own boundaries.

Genesis and Creation

Creation usually emphasizes the action of a subject who produces something. Genesis emphasizes becoming: the totality of conditions, transformations, and constraints in which a new form appears and becomes established. Genesis may therefore include conscious creation but is not reducible to it.

Working Definition

Genesis is the process of a form coming into being through the transformation of preceding conditions, the emergence of distinctions, the establishment of connections, and subsequent stabilization.
