The fundamental thing is the act of distinction performed by consciousness.
Not the object.
Not the category.
Not the system.
Not the property.
Not the cause.
Because the object, the category, the property, the cause, and the system appear only after consciousness has already made a distinction.
They do not precede distinction.
They arise as its result.
When consciousness says: “here is an object,” it has already stopped the flow of distinction at a certain point.
When consciousness says: “here is a property,” it has already singled out a certain feature from the continuity of what is happening.
When consciousness says: “here is a cause,” it has already connected some distinguished elements with others and fixed a certain route between them.
When consciousness says: “here is a category,” it has already performed an act of generalization and temporarily closed further distinction for the convenience of thought.
Therefore, any fixed entity is not a primary element of reality, but already the result of distinction.
But the key point is that distinction has no final limit.
Consciousness can continue distinguishing further.
Inside an object, new levels can be distinguished.
Inside a property, shades of that property can be distinguished.
Inside a cause, additional conditions, connections, premises, and hidden transitions can be distinguished.
Inside a category, one can distinguish what the category erased, collapsed, or declared to be “the same.”
Anything that has been distinguished can be distinguished even more deeply.
This is exactly what makes the final discreteness of reality impossible.
Because discreteness presupposes a final boundary.
It presupposes that somewhere there exists a final division, after which there is nothing left to distinguish.
It presupposes a final level at which one can say:
“that’s it, there is no further division; here is the final unit of reality.”
But if distinction is potentially infinite, then no boundary can be fundamental.
Any boundary turns out not to be the final wall of being, but a temporary halt of distinction.
It exists not as an absolute line within reality itself, but as the point at which consciousness has, for the moment, stopped going deeper.
This is why reality cannot be understood as a set of final discrete blocks.
Discreteness appears where distinction has been stopped.
Gradientness reveals itself where distinction continues.
Mathematically, this can be represented like this: if every already distinguished segment can be divided again, and then divided again, and then again, then the step of distinction tends toward disappearance as a final magnitude.
No “last brick” appears.
No “last category” appears.
No “last boundary” appears.
At the limit of the infinite deepening of distinction, the rigid boundary dissolves into transition.
It is in this sense that reality is gradient.
A gradient is not another entity inside reality.
A gradient is a way of seeing reality without the final stoppage of distinction.
It is a state in which every boundary turns out to be temporary, every object — a local stabilization, every property — a singled-out shade, every category — a halted generalization.
Therefore, objects are not the foundation of reality.
They are local stabilizations of distinction.
Categories are not the foundation of reality.
They arise at the moment when distinction is stopped.
Properties are not the foundation of reality.
They are what consciousness has singled out within what has already been distinguished.
The system is not the foundation of reality.
A system is a network of already performed distinctions, fixed into a stable route.
But the possibility of further distinction always remains.
And if distinction can continue infinitely inward, then reality cannot be finally discrete.
It can look discrete only at the level where consciousness has temporarily stopped.
But as soon as distinction continues, the discrete boundary ceases to be absolute and reveals itself as transition.
That is why reality is fundamentally not discrete, but gradient.
Not because ready-made “gradients” are already lying inside it as objective entities.
But because any final boundary is destroyed by the very possibility of further distinction.
Reality is gradient because distinction does not end.
